After the 100 millionth vote has been cast for the 2008 MLB All-Star game, Hanley is locked in a tight race with Astros shortstop Miguel Tejada for the starting position. Ramirez outpolled Tejada 296,831 to 158,055 last week to take over first place by 70,664 votes, a margin that can change very quickly. The announcement of the starters will be made on Sunday, July 6, and voting ends on July 2nd, just over a week to decide the outcome.
“These final two weeks of balloting figure to prove pivotal,” said Dinn Mann, Executive Vice President, Content, MLB.com. “Leaders in numerous categories frequently change as a result of 6-8 million votes being cast online every day.”
While Tejada and Ramirez are the front runners for the starting spot, others are still within striking distance. Ryan Theriot of the Cubs is in third place, less than 140,000 votes behind Tejada, followed by Jimmy Rollins of the Phillies and Jose Reyes of the Mets. Theriot has a good chance of remaining in the hunt in part due to the success of the Cubs.
