Hanley to undergo shoulder surgery

The impact of being without Hanley Ramirez has hurt the Marlins for much of the second half.

On Thursday, the Marlins will have a better idea of how long their three-time All-Star shortstop will need to get back on the field.

Ramirez is scheduled to undergo surgery on his left shoulder Thursday, with the procedure being performed by Dr. James Andrews in Birmingham, Ala.

Ramirez went on the disabled list on Aug. 10, retroactive to Aug. 2, after he injured his shoulder while making a diving attempt to catch a ball against the Mets at Citi Field.

The Marlins had battled back from 11 games below .500 to be 55-55 when Ramirez went down.

Ramirez is hopeful to be ready for Opening Day in 2012.

“With Hanley in the lineup, we had a pretty good record, because he adds to the offense,” manager Jack McKeon said. “Even though he’s had what we consider an off year, he is still a threat to break the game open all the time. Also, how they pitch the other hitters around him.”
