Hanley to have CT scan on left shoulder

Before Hanley Ramirez undergoes season-ending shoulder surgery, the Marlins shortstop will first have a CT scan to get a better indication of the severity of the injury.

No surgery date has been set, and the CT scan is expected in the next few days.

The hope is the three-time All-Star will be ready for Opening Day. But an accurate recovery timetable won’t be known until the surgery on his left shoulder is completed.

“We don’t know yet,” said Ramirez on how quickly he will be back on the field. “We’ve got to do that test first. After that test, they’re going to decide what to do, what type of surgery.”

Ramirez had surgery on the same shoulder after the 2007 season. The procedure was done in October of that year, and he was ready for Spring Training.

In fact, Ramirez enjoyed a strong 2008, batting .301 with 33 homers and 125 runs scored.

“We are at a time right now, after the surgery, I’ve just got to work hard,” Ramirez said. “I’ve done it before. I was ready for the first day of Spring Training. So hopefully, it’s not a surgery that takes longer than it was before.”

The injury Ramirez is dealing with now, he said, “is worse” than how he felt in 2007.

Ramirez sustained the injury while making a diving attempt on a fly ball in New York on Aug. 2. He left the game and went on the disabled list on Aug. 10, retroactive to Aug. 3.
