To Hanley Ramirez, it was just a solo home run that gave the Marlins a 1-0 lead. Only later did he learn his 21st homer of the season was a milestone.
Ramirez’s shot into the left-field seats in the fourth inning Sunday was his 100th career home run. He hit it in his 595th game, making him the fourth-fastest shortstop in history to reach 100 home runs, the Elias Sports Bureau said.
Alex Rodriguez was the fastest in 470 games. Nomar Garciaparra did it in 491 and Ernie Banks in 500.
“I didn’t even know it was my 100th home run,’‘ Ramirez said, not in the mood to dwell on his accomplishment after Florida’s 5-4 loss. “After the game, they gave me the ball and told me it was my 100th home run.’‘
