It turns out it’s unprecedented.
When Astros manager Cecil Cooper decided to issue Johnson a free pass with a runner on second and two outs in the sixth inning, it was the first time a batter had ever been intentionally walked in front of the Marlins’ superstar.
And it’s easy to see why.
Ramirez has not only been the starting shortstop for the National League All-Star team the past two years, but he also came in leading the NL with a .419 batting average with runners in scoring position.

Cooper “just wanted righty on righty,” said Ramirez, who proceeded to line a first-pitch slider from Chris Sampson — one he called “a hanger” — into left field for his 75th RBI and a 7-2 lead for the Marlins.
“Or maybe I’m struggling right now,” Ramirez, batting .389 in August, joked.
