Making a Case: Hanley trumps Rollins at short in NL

In the last two seasons, Jimmy Rollins has won an MVP, two Gold Gloves, a silver slugger and a World Series. But that’s in the past and as far as this season goes, Rollins isn’t worthy of being an All-Star. However, that hasn’t stopped fans from racking up the votes in favor of Rollins.

As recent as June 23 — the last time the votes were announced — Rollins ranked second among NL shortstops after leading the position for several weeks. But the right man for the job is the man that finally surpassed J-Roll.

Hanley Ramirez is that man, and he is the only logical choice to start at short for the NL at this season’s Midsummer Classic. And once you take a look at the numbers of the leading shortstop candidates, it is ridiculous to see that Ramirez is even being contested by Rollins.

Ramirez leads all NL shortstops in runs (47), hits (92), home runs (12), RBIs (50), stolen bases (11) and on-base percentage (.402). His .335 batting average trails leader Christian Guzman by just one percentage point, and he is second to Miguel Tejada in doubles by one two-bagger.
