Hanley was given Sunday’s game against the Mets off, due to soreness in his left shoulder. Hanley had been struggling with the injury for a couple of weeks, prompting Marlins manager Fredi Gonzalez to give Hanley a rest on the last game of the year. The Marlins went on to beat the Mets and end New York’s hopes for a playoff spot, capping what most fans would call a very successful season. As he did last year, Hanley led the Florida offense, finishing with a .301 batting average with 33 home runs, 67 RBIs and 125 runs scored, which equals the club record he set in 2007, in 153 games. Hanley led the Marlins in hits(177), runs (125), home runs (33), total bases (318), walks (92), stolen bases (35), on base percentage (.400), slugging percentage (.540), and batting average (.310). Hanley’s 125 runs scored led the majors.
Despite winning 84 games, the third most in franchise history behind the two World Championship teams, most people expect major changes throughout the organization. With 17 players eligible for arbitration, the Marlins will have to chose how to allocate their money this offseason. While Hanley is locked up for years to come, the team on the field next year for the Marlins could look very different than this year’s version.
